Development of the Hindgut

The hind gut gives rise to:

  • distal transverse colon
  • descending colon
  • sigmoid colon
  • rectum.

All of these parts receive their blood supply from the
inferior mesenteric artery.

Initially, the distal end of the hindgut is connected to a space called the cloaca in the caudal end of the embryo. Cloaca is the Latin word for "sewer" and it represents a common outflow for the urinary and digestive systems.

A partition called the
urorectal septum will divide the cloaca into a urogenital sinus located anteriorly and the rectum and anal canal located posteriorly.

The urogenital sinus will become the bladder and urethra and will be further studied in development of the urogenital tract.

The
end of the hindgut will form the rectum. Perforation of the cloacal or proctorial membrane produces the anal opening.
